Oceanco delivers 91.5m Equanimity

Jun 12 2014Administrator

The industry's first PYC luxury yacht. Oceanco delivers the industry’s first luxury superyacht designed and built to be PYC compliant

The etymology of the word equanimity derives from the Latin aequus meaning balanced and animus meaning spirit or internal state. The concept of equanimity—internal balance— is both profound and refined. Oceanco’s newly delivered 91.5-metre Equanimity is aptly named; from her exterior to her interior to her inner core, she is perfectly well balanced.

Equanimity (Y709) has the distinction of being the industry’s first superyacht designed and built to be fully Passenger Yacht Code (PYC) compliant. Oceanco CEO, Marcel Onkenhout, says, “working together with Lloyd's Register and Cayman Islands Shipping Registry— we designed, developed, engineered and built a magnificent yacht, which will undoubtedly set new standards in the industry.”

The owners look forward to extensive world travel aboard their distinctive luxury vessel. Measuring 91.5 metres in length with a 14.5-metre beam, her chic clean exterior styling is the combined work of Oceanco and Andrew Winch Designs. The breathtakingly beautiful interior has also benefitted from the quintessential touch of designer Andrew Winch. The inherent oriental-inspired themes yield a montage of sumptuous materials such as wenge, gold leaf, bamboo and marbles creating an opulent and soothing ambiance that complements the Owners’ China origins.
Equanimity provides luxury accommodation for 26 guests in a variety of flexibly configured staterooms— a magnificent master suite, three VIPs, three doubles and two twin staterooms. She has ample accommodation for 28 crew to cater to all the owners’ and guests’ desires.

The grandeur of the spa and beach club is complete with sauna, hammam, experiential showers, plunge pool and multi-faceted beauty salon. The spa area leads on to a fully equipped gym and Pilates studio that can be extended through a fold down platform at sea level, creating an indoor-outdoor wellness area that is unequalled afloat.

Equanimity hosts two Zodiac Fast Rescue Ribs and two 10.5-metre custom Hodgdon tenders. Additionally, there is a spectacular 20m² swimming pool with jets. Providing a new benchmark in superyacht-based aviation, the upper deck boasts a fully certified helipad in accordance with CAP437 regulations as adapted for the PYC.

Equanimity is steel hulled with an aluminium superstructure and is propelled by twin 4,828hp/3,600kW MTU 20V 4000 M73L engines, enabling her to achieve top speeds in excess of 20 knots.

Oceanco Hosts the Six Finalists in the Young Designer of the Year Award

May 14 2014Administrator

Oceanco, the sponsor of the annual "Young Designer of the Year" Award, a ShowBoats Design Awards competition, hosted the six finalists who had competed for the coveted trophy. The international group of young designers- Lujac Desautel, Dennis Dreier, Graham Kukla, Raphaël Laloux, Jiantao Zhu, Daniel Zoghby- arrived in Amsterdam on the 13th of May and were accompanied by Oceanco's Paris Baloumis, Patrick Casanova, Iris Bosschaart and Robert Tan to a welcome dinner at the I-Dock restaurant. The next morning, the group was shuttled from Amsterdam to the Oceanco facilities.

Upon arrival at Oceanco, the finalists toured the Oceanco facilities and conversed about the industry's first fully Passenger Yacht Code (PYC) compliant yacht. Afterwards, the finalists were taken on a high speed thrill ride to Rotterdam via RIB tender and were hosted to lunch at Hotel New York-an historic landmark building that used to be the headquarters of the Holland America Line. As if the day were not full enough, the group was returned to Amsterdam where they took part in a tour of the Heineken Brewery also referred to as the Heineken Experience.

The "Young Designer of the Year Award" is a ShowBoats Design Awards competition, presented by Boat International Media, celebrating the best of superyacht design. Eligible student and trainee designers under the age of 25 must submit a design that relates to a realistic client request. They are encouraged to exhibit detailed technical and design skills. The entries are judged by a group of international superyacht designers.

Oceanco is highly supportive of new talent in the marine industry. It is in Oceanco’s DNA to be open to innovative ideas and to embrace forward thinking technology. By sponsoring the “Young Designer of the Year Award” and supporting the ShowBoats Design Awards competition, Oceanco hopes to encourage young designers to express a fresh and original approach to yacht design.

Oceanco on Solar: The World's Largest Sailing Yacht Project

Jan 23 2013Administrator

Oceanco has produced some of the finest yachts on the water, all with a distinctive characteristic which has set the yard aside as one of the greatest yacht builders in the industry. We sat down with Mohammed Al Barwani, Owner of Oceanco, and Marcel Onkenhout, the CEO of the Dutch shipyard, to discuss Project Solar; the construction project set to be the largest sailing yacht in the world upon her launch in 2015.

“We have, at the moment, six yachts under construction all above 80m, so that’s not a bad start for 2013,” says Marcel Onkenhout. “The future is looking bright.”
Mohammed Al Barwani acquired the company in 2010 and noted how the yard has grown in the past few years, encompassing what we can expect for 2013. “We are growing, we are quite busy and we are investing in new facilities, new concepts and new architectural drawings, renderings and so on Oceanco recently introduced one of their current projects under construction at the moment, the exciting 106m Solar – an environmentally friendly sailing yacht equipped with a Dyna Rig System which will be the largest yacht ever built in Holland upon her launch. This project was brought to the fore by designers at Nuvolari & Lenard and project managed by Moran Yacht & Ship.

“We are very proud of the project; it’s not only the largest project but a very environmental project. The project is called Solar and it would rely heavily, or chiefly, on power from solar energy.”

Watch the full video for more information on Solar and the yard’s views on the economical benefits the superyacht industry provides and receives from two of the most successful names in the superyacht industry.

Marcel Onkenhout singled out by the International Superyacht Society

Nov 20 2012Administrator

Marcel Onkenhout, CEO of Oceanco, was awarded the ‘International Superyacht Society’s Excellence in Innovation Award’ at their annual Gala held on the 25th of October, 2012, during the Fort International Lauderdale Boat Show. The award, open to every aspect of the marine industry, is given to an individual or business that has demonstrated innovation in their endeavours within the previous year.

Onkenhout has been highly original in his team development and business management and has taken the company forward with innovative thinking. The ISS acknowledged that, while other successful top yards have had generations of success to lean on, Oceanco, through Marcel's steady leadership and creative thinking, is standing head to head with the industry's longest-established and most respected yards. Oceanco’s maxim “Yachts for Visionary Owners” clearly extends itself now to visionary management.

In his acceptance speech Onkenhout chose to accept the award on behalf of the Oceanco team. He also explained that for Oceanco, innovation was finding better ways to do things - being more creative in design, finding new ways to build yachts, and creating a positive working relationship.

This is not the first time Oceanco has been recognized by the ISS. In 2008, Oceanco’s 82m Alfa Nero received the award for best power yacht 65m+ and then in 2010, their 85.5m Sunrays received an award in the same category.

[Note: The International Superyacht Society (ISS) was founded in 1989 and represents the large yacht industry. Its fundamental mission is to build alliances worldwide with regional associations; to serve as communications conduit for issues affecting the marketplace, owners, crew and industry members; and to recognize achievement as well as provide educational opportunities and networking events.

Each year ISS presents its peer-reviewed Design and Leadership Awards, which recognize individuals and companies for their expertise, leadership and dedication to raising the standards of design, construction, maintenance, repair and operation of large yachts.

Networking and educational programs are conducted internationally and include open forums, informal gatherings and round-tables.

It is ISS’s priority to foster dialogue among Society members and others in the large yacht segment of the marine industry, leading to the strengthening and growth of the business interests of Society members and the industry as a whole.]
